Sexual Sabar

image

We are taking it westward to Senegal, a country renown for its rich Culture, visible in its sights, sounds, smells, and best of all, its music and dance.
Senegal, the land of the baobab tree, whose wood makes the Sabar drum. The Sabar is played with a stick and a free hand, producing a fast paced, high pitched sound. When listening to Mbalax, (pronounced Mbala)  Senegalese national dance music,  one cannot miss the shrill drumming of the Sabar. The drumming was typically accompanied by Sabar dancing.  While there were and still are many occasions to which both men and women performed the Sabar, this post will focus on the Sexuality behind the dance.

In this context, The Sabar would typically be performed by young women looking to attract a potential spouse. During the dance, the woman's skirt was occasionally hiked up, using suggestive hand and leg motions, exposing her bare thighs. This was usually complimented by intense waist movement and hip gyration, often exaggerated by the beautiful band of beads that she would wear around her waist.
Have a look below:

Keep in mind that this is a very traditional dance. Is it not Interesting that it comes from a continent that is still highly  shrouded in sexual secrecy? Thoughts?
